The Petanque Player
Sightseeing attraction | Leeds | England | United Kingdom
The Petanque Player Statue is a striking bronze sculpture located in Bond Court, a bustling square in the heart of Leeds. Created in 2000 by artist Roger Burnett, it depicts a French petanque player being observed by a curious Yorkshire family. This representation symbolizes the cultural connection between Leeds and its sister city Lille in France.
The statue was unveiled at the Northern Pétanque Colliers CRE Cup, an annual tournament established in 1998. It is situated near a real petanque court, used by locals and visitors alike. An information board on site explains the rules of the game and invites people to become familiar with the French tradition.
Bond Court has since become a hub for petanque enthusiasts, hosting regular tournaments and summer championships that reflect the vibrant community and interest in the sport. The statue remains a fascinating and interactive artwork, blending history, sport, and art in the heart of Leeds' busy financial district.
